What kinds of cases are heard in City Court of East St. Tammany?

The Court handles:

What’s the proper way to act while Court is in session?

  • Proper Courtroom decorum is based on showing respect for our laws and our Courts. We also expect you to behave in a way that does not distract from the Court proceedings.
  • Leave cell phones, smart phones and other electronic devices at home or in your car as they are not permitted inside the Court.
  • Spectators must be quiet while Court is in session. That means you cannot talk, whisper, giggle or laugh.
  • You may not eat, drink or chew gum in the Courtroom.
  • Spectators, witnesses, plaintiffs and defendants may not read while the Court is in session.
  • There is no smoking inside the Courthouse, including in the Courtroom.
  • Do not go in and out of the Courtroom while Court is in session, even while waiting for your case to be heard.
  • If you are a witness, defendant or plaintiff, only speak when you are called to the stand or questioned by the Judge. When you do speak, speak clearly and loudly enough to be heard. Stay calm; be respectful of the attorneys and other Court officials who may ask you questions. Be attentive and responsive. Listen carefully to any instructions from the Judge or other Court officials.
  • Call the Judge “Your Honor” or “Judge” to show respect for his office.
  • Do not interrupt the Judge, attorneys or other parties in your case.

Can I use my cell phone or listen to music while in the Courtroom?

  • No. You may not have a cell phone or smart phone in the Courtroom.
  • You also may not use other electronic devices, including iPads/tablets, iPods or MP3 players.
  • If you bring your phone into the Courtroom or Courthouse, the Judge may fine you. The Marshal or a Deputy will immediately seize your phone. Once you pay your fine at the window in the main lobby, your cell phone will be returned to you.

Can I read a newspaper while I’m in the Courtroom?

  • Visitors cannot read while Court is in session.

Where can I park while visiting the Courthouse?

  • A parking lot is located next door to the left of courthouse at no cost to the public.
  • Public parking can be limited around the Courthouse, especially on days with busy Court hearings. Plan to arrive in plenty of time to find legal parking, go through Courthouse security and get in to your Court hearing.
  • There is ample parking for handicapped visitors in the Courthouse parking lot near the front door. You must have a legal placard in order to use those parking spaces.
  • Obey all traffic laws when parking on the streets surrounding the Courthouse.
  • Please do not park in private parking lots without permission.
  • Please do not park in spaces reserved for Court personnel or the Marshal’s office. Violators will be towed at the owner’s expense.

Where do I pay my traffic ticket?

  • You may pay your traffic ticket either in person at the Courthouse, by mail or, in certain limited cases, online.
  • To pay in person, please go to the Clerk of Court help desk window in the lobby of the Courthouse. The lobby hours are 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m., Monday through Friday, except for official holidays.
  • Payment may be made by credit card, cashier’s check, money order or cash. A 5% processing fee will be assessed for all credit card transactions at the window. No personal checks will be accepted.
  • When mailing, sign the back of the ticket, then send it along with your payment to address on the ticket. Your payment must be received by the Court before your Court appearance date.
  • When paying in person, bring a copy of the ticket with you.

Where do I find out how many hours of Public or Community Service I have left?

If you have been ordered to perform community service hours as part of your sentence, you MUST contact the Director for Keep Slidell Beautiful (KSB), through their website. You will need to view the monthly calendar for available dates and times, and REPORT IN PERSON to receive your assignment. Community service hours performed with any agency or non-profit that is NOT approved by the Judge and designated by the KSB Director will NOT count toward your court-ordered requirements. Your probation officer has no discretion to deviate from the Judge’s orders on your probation requirements.
